I Wanna Be a 50's Style Housewife

It all seemed so simple then...I wanna go back to that space in time when things were neat-o and casseroles were the mainstay of the dinner menu. Wait....casseroles are the mainstay of my dinner menu! Maybe I am not too far off the mark. I have a black and white checkerboard floor in my kitchen, I like to wear an apron when I cook, and I can make a mean cherry pie from scratch -- including using fresh cherries.
I just need the little black and white polka dot dress, oh, and a better figure to fit into it!
Seriously though, I wish sometimes that morals and values of nearly 6 decades ago were still intact today. It would be a refreshing change of pace. Hmmmm......I gotta find some books written about housekeeping at the time so that I can get a better perspective.
Got any suggestions?

Heloise's Housekeeping Hints, published in 1959 is a good fix for the era of the homemaker. I love her version of the then popular new product, tv dinners!

And I seek out vintage homemaking magazines from teh 1940's and 50's on eBay and in antique/thrift shops. Usually run about $3 an issue, but so much better reading than our modern day magazines!

Got you on the black and white polka dot dress, Gina! LOL I actually bought one at a yard sale over the summer for a dollar!

Read http://pleasantviewschoolhouse.blogspot.com/ She can also point you to some good old fashioned housekeeping books, as I think she collects them! She certainly quotes from ones at least once a week (both manuals as well as some vintage books that have great housekeepers talking about their homes).
You might also be able to buy a housedress from her at her Etsy site ;-) (No housedresses, but here's a pretty nightgown up right now http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=7815384 ).

No affiliation, I just adore the pictures her son takes that she posts on her blog and love the one thing I've bought from her.
